Chalmers 97*, Malhotra Three-fer Power Canada U19 Women to Club Doubleheader Sweep

Cricket Canada’s U19 Women’s team produced their most complete day of the inaugural tour of Trinidad & Tobago on Monday, May 18, sweeping a club doubleheader against the North Zone Cricket Academy with comprehensive wins of 35 and 48 runs. Harper Chalmers struck a brilliant 97 not out in the morning fixture, and Snigdha Malhotra returned career-best figures of 3/11 to dismantle North Zone’s chase in the afternoon at Queens Park Oval. The wins push Canada to three victories in four matches on tour.

Coming off the program’s first-ever international win against Trinidad & Tobago U19 on Saturday, the squad carried that momentum into the club arena. Across the two matches, Canada were tested in different ways — first asked to defend a big total, then asked to defend a modest one — and answered both questions convincingly.

Game 1  —  Canada U19W won by 35 runs

Inserted to bat after losing the toss, Canada lost Vritti Dahiya for a duck in the very first over to Jessica Davis. From there, Harper Chalmers and Hasini Santhoshkumar produced an outstanding 164-run second-wicket partnership that effectively decided the contest. Chalmers timed the ball superbly through the off side and finished unbeaten on 97 from 64 balls — a career-best knock studded with 16 fours and struck at a strike rate of 151.6, just three runs short of a maiden international century. Santhoshkumar provided the rotation, anchoring her end with a measured 30 from 54 deliveries. Canada finished on 176/2 from their 20 overs.

North Zone’s chase never quite found rhythm against a varied Canadian attack. Vritti Dahiya struck twice — including the key wicket of Naomi Ali (30 off 29) — to finish with 2/26 from her four overs. Namrit Dhillon (1/27) chipped in, while Shreya Vora’s disciplined four overs cost just 19 at an economy of 4.8 to choke the middle overs. Jessica Davis was unbeaten on 45 (38) at the close, but North Zone could only manage 141/3 — leaving Canada home by 35 runs.

Result: Canada U19W won by 35 runs

Canada U19W: 176/2 (20 overs) — Harper Chalmers 97* (64), Hasini Santhoshkumar 30 (54), Khadeeja Fatima 1* (6)

North Zone Cricket Academy: 141/3 (20 overs) — Jessica Davis 45* (38), Seraiah Kawalsingh 37 (40), Naomi Ali 30 (29)

Best bowling (Canada): Vritti Dahiya 2/26 (4), Namrit Dhillon 1/27 (4), Shreya Vora 0/19 (4)

Game 2  —  Canada U19W won by 48 runs  |  Queens Park Oval

Choosing to bat at the iconic Queens Park Oval, Canada were tested early when Harper Chalmers fell for 1 to Freeda La Rosa. Namrit Dhillon and Khadeeja Fatima then absorbed pressure with a 43-run second-wicket stand. Fatima played the more positive hand, contributing 20 off 21 (2 fours) before being stumped, while Dhillon ground out a patient 29 from 44 deliveries to hold the innings together. Vritti Dahiya (18 off 16, 3 fours) added late impetus, and Rameen Rashid finished unbeaten on 12 from 12 to push Canada to 117/4 from their 15 overs.

It was the bowling and the wicketkeeping that defined the contest. Snigdha Malhotra produced a spell of disciplined seam bowling, returning 3 wickets for just 11 runs from her three overs at an economy of 3.7 — the standout effort with the ball on the day. Hasini Santhoshkumar (1/9 from 2) provided immaculate support, Shreya Vora (3-0-10-0) kept the pressure on at 3.3 an over, and Vritti Dahiya bowled two parsimonious overs for just 7. Behind the stumps, Khadeeja Fatima was exceptional with the gloves, pulling off three brilliant run-outs — dismissing Naomi Ali, Jamila Daniel and Rebekah Samlal — and earning the MVP award for the North Zone fixture for her superb all-round performance. North Zone slipped to 16/3 inside four overs and never recovered, finishing on 69/7 — 48 runs adrift.

Result: Canada U19W won by 48 runs

Canada U19W: 117/4 (15 overs) — Namrit Dhillon 29 (44), Khadeeja Fatima 20 (21), Vritti Dahiya 18 (16), Rameen Rashid 12* (12)

Looking Ahead

With three wins from four matches, Canada turn their attention back to the international series against Trinidad & Tobago U19 on Tuesday, May 19. Monday’s results offered something important for the coaching staff: contributions from multiple batters across both fixtures, an emerging bowler in Snigdha Malhotra, a wicketkeeper in Khadeeja Fatima who is turning half-chances into wickets, and a fielding unit that looks increasingly comfortable closing matches out.

The remaining tour schedule includes further club fixtures against Caldrac Achievers WCC, the UWI Women’s Team, Without Limits Cricket Team and Hibiscus Cricket Club, plus two further T20Is against T&T U19 on Saturday, May 23 — all building toward the ICC U19 Girls’ Americas Region World Cup Qualifiers, which Canada hosts at home from August 7 to 17, 2026.
