You read it right friends! Cricket Canada (CC) blazed through Belize in their WT20 Regional Americas Qualifier opener. The match was scheduled to start at 3 pm (local time) at Raleigh Cricket club, Morrisville. Belize won the toss and decided to bat first but never got going and lost wickets at regular intervals.
RG Don on his debut for Canada struck twice in his very first over, accounting for wickets of Muslar and Sutherland. Things went downhill from then on for Belize. Run scoring was made extremely difficult accurate bowling by all CC bowlers and losing wickets at regular intervals ensured half the side was sent back at a paltry score of 21. The tail could not wag much either and they were bowled out for a very low total of 42 in 14.3 overs. RG Don returned with figures of 3 (wickets) for 5 (runs) from 3 overs. Cecil was impressive with the new ball taking a wicket and skipper Nitish took 3 wickets in 1 over. Spinners Dutta & Saad also chipped in with a wicket each.
Chasing 43 to win, CC openers strode out like lions in the park. It took them all of 18 balls to get to the target and register their first win in the tournament. Srimantha Wijeratne and Navneet Dhaliwal scored 20 runs a piece in the partnership that saw CC winning the game with 10 wickets. Balls were dispatched to the fence or were sent sailing over them as the entire game was finished by openers in 3 overs.
Cricket Canada would like to roll this pitch up and take it along wherever they played. It was a complete performance against an inexperienced Belize side. Captain NR Kumar was happy with the performance and says that boys were very happy with this win.
Canada plays Panama today at 11.00am local time 12pm (EST).
