Cricket Canada in discussions over new professional league

Cricket Canada has agreed a Memorandum of Understanding with a group of investors who wish to bring professional cricket to Canada. This group has complied with all aspects of Cricket Canada’s sanction policy, and the two parties are now moving towards finalizing an agreement.The proposal involves franchise-based teams involving high-level cricketers from across the world competing in a twenty over league in Canada, starting in 2018. Each team will be required to include Canadian qualified players in their squads. It is planned that initially games will be played in the Toronto area. Discussions are still in progress, and Cricket Canada is optimistic that a final agreement will include commitments to the development of cricket in Canada at all levels.

Cricket Canada president Ranjit Saini:-

“Twenty20 Major League Cricket has the potential to change Canadian cricket for ever. It is a great challenge and Cricket Canada is ready to deliver a resounding success. Canada is a great sporting country and event hosting and management skills exist in abundance. This event will not only be a great cricket experience, it will also help grow our tourism potential as a nation.”

Founder and Group CEO of Mercuri, Mr. B. Sriram stated: “We are absolutely delighted to partner with Cricket Canada to launch the Twenty20 major cricket league and contribute directly to the success of Cricket in Canada. We firmly believe that this league will help to further develop and strengthen the Senior National side of Canada besides identify and develop the grassroots talent available in that continent.”

Cricket Canada will release full details when a final agreement is signed.
